PSHE and RSHE
Intent
At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality PSHE and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum that supports pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and safeguarding. Our curriculum is designed to equip children with the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead safe, healthy, respectful and fulfilling lives both now and in the future.
We recognise that children are growing up in an increasingly complex world where they experience relationships and communication both online and offline. Through our carefully planned curriculum, pupils develop the understanding needed to build positive relationships, manage emotions, respect themselves and others, recognise risks and know how to seek help when needed.
Our intention is to support children to:
- develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem;
- understand physical and mental wellbeing;
- build positive, respectful and healthy relationships;
- recognise and manage risk both online and offline;
- understand personal boundaries and consent in an age-appropriate way;
- value diversity and challenge stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination; and
- become responsible, respectful and active members of society.
We aim to provide a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment where children feel listened to, valued and empowered to discuss important issues openly and respectfully.
By the time pupils leave Burton Pidsea Primary School, they will have developed the personal, social and emotional understanding needed to make informed decisions, contribute positively to society and navigate the opportunities and challenges of modern life with confidence and compassion.
Implementation
At Burton Pidsea Primary School, PSHE and RSHE are central to our curriculum and wider school ethos. We use the Jigsaw programme to provide a progressive and carefully sequenced curriculum that builds pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills year by year.
The Jigsaw programme incorporates the statutory requirements for Relationships Education and Health Education and supports children in developing emotional literacy, resilience, self-awareness and positive relationship skills. Teaching is age-appropriate, inclusive and responsive to the needs of our pupils and community.
Through carefully planned lessons, pupils learn about:
- healthy and respectful relationships;
- physical and mental wellbeing;
- online safety and digital wellbeing;
- personal safety and safeguarding;
- emotions and self-regulation;
- diversity, equality and inclusion;
- healthy lifestyles;
- puberty and growing up; and
- how to seek help and support when needed.
Children are taught to recognise unsafe situations, harmful behaviour and unhealthy relationships, including bullying and inappropriate online behaviour. Teaching promotes kindness, empathy, mutual respect and the importance of personal boundaries.
PSHE and RSHE are delivered through:
- weekly Jigsaw lessons;
- Science and Computing lessons;
- assemblies and themed events;
- restorative approaches to behaviour;
- safeguarding and wellbeing work;
- visitors and external agencies where appropriate; and
- wider opportunities across school life.
Our curriculum reflects British Values, supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and promotes our school values of Pride, Honesty, Resilience, Responsibility, Tolerance and Respect.
Teachers create a safe and supportive classroom environment where pupils feel confident to ask questions, discuss sensitive issues appropriately and reflect on their learning. Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including pupils with SEND.
Impact
By the end of their time at Burton Pidsea Primary School, pupils will feel safe, valued and respected within our school community. They will have developed the knowledge, understanding and confidence needed to make informed choices about their relationships, health and wellbeing.
Pupils will:
- demonstrate resilience, confidence and self-belief;
- understand how to manage emotions and respond positively to challenges;
- recognise how to keep themselves safe both online and offline;
- understand the importance of healthy, respectful relationships;
- show empathy, kindness and respect towards others;
- understand how to seek help if they feel worried, unsafe or vulnerable; and
- appreciate diversity and demonstrate inclusive attitudes.
Children will be able to reflect on their actions, take responsibility for their behaviour and resolve conflict in a respectful and constructive way through our restorative approach.
As a result of our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, pupils will leave Burton Pidsea Primary School equipped with the personal, social and emotional skills needed to thrive in modern Britain and move forward into the next stage of their education as confident, respectful and responsible young people.
