At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we recognise that children with medical conditions, whether long-term or short-term, should be appropriately supported to ensure they have full access to education.

Where possible, parents/carers are expected to administer medication to their children at home. However, we understand that there may be occasions when medication needs to be administered during the school day.

The school will only administer medication that has been prescribed by a doctor or other appropriately qualified healthcare professional. Over-the-counter medication, including cough sweets and throat lozenges, will not be administered in school.

If your child requires prescribed medication during the school day, the following procedures must be followed:

• Parental consent: A 'Parental Agreement for School to Administer Prescribed Medicine' form must be completed and signed before medication can be administered.
• Clearly labelled medication: All medication must be provided in its original packaging, with the child's name, prescribed dosage and administration instructions clearly displayed on the pharmacy label.
• Handing in medication: The completed consent form and medication must be handed directly to the school office, NOT to the class teacher.
• Collection of medication: Parents/carers are responsible for collecting medication from the school office at the end of the school day where daily collection is required. Medication must not be left in school unnecessarily.

Please note: It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure that medication is collected when required. The school cannot accept responsibility for parents/carers failing to collect medication, although any medication remaining on the premises will be stored safely in accordance with school procedures.

Arrangements for emergency medication, such as asthma inhalers and adrenaline auto-injectors, or medication required for ongoing medical conditions, will be agreed separately where appropriate.

These procedures are in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children and staff. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
