Physical Education
Exercise not only changes your body; it changes your mind, your attitude and your mood
Intent
At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Physical Education curriculum that inspires all pupils to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. We are committed to promoting healthy bodies, healthy minds and positive lifestyles through engaging and inclusive learning opportunities.
Our intention is for children to develop the fundamental movement skills, physical confidence and sport-specific techniques needed to participate successfully in a range of physical activities. We strive to ensure that all pupils experience success and challenge, enabling them to build resilience, determination and self-belief.
Through Physical Education, pupils learn the importance of cooperation, collaboration and teamwork. They develop an understanding of fairness, respect and equity in both competitive and non-competitive contexts, embedding values that extend beyond sport and into everyday life.
By the time they leave our school, children will have developed the skills, confidence and positive attitudes needed to lead active, healthy lives and to participate fully in physical activity at the next stage of their education and beyond.
Implementation
At Burton Pidsea Primary School, Physical Education is delivered using the Get Set 4 PE scheme, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and clear progression of skills across year groups. The scheme provides carefully sequenced lessons that build on prior learning and support the development of fundamental movement skills, sport-specific skills and physical confidence.
Children take part in at least two hours of high-quality physical education each week, alongside additional opportunities for physical activity within the classroom, including movement breaks, relaxation and mindfulness activities. Lessons follow a structured sequence that includes warm-ups, skill development, application of skills in game situations and cool-downs, helping pupils understand how exercise supports a healthy lifestyle.
Through PE, children develop not only physical competence but also important social and emotional skills. They learn to work collaboratively, show respect for others, demonstrate resilience, overcome challenges and respond positively to both success and defeat. Opportunities for teamwork and healthy competition encourage pupils to build confidence and develop a positive attitude towards physical activity.
Our PE curriculum aims to inspire all children to enjoy being active and to develop the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to lead healthy, active lives.
Impact
By the end of their time at Burton Pidsea Primary School, pupils will have developed confidence and competence across a wide range of sports and physical activities. Through the progressive structure of the Get Set 4 PE scheme, children build secure fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance and coordination, alongside sport-specific skills and tactical understanding.
Pupils demonstrate resilience, self-control and determination when participating in team games and competitive situations. They understand the importance of fairness, respect and teamwork, and are able to respond positively to both success and challenge.
Through PE and complementary learning about healthy lifestyles, diet and emotional wellbeing, children develop an understanding of how to take responsibility for their own health and fitness. They leave our school equipped with the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to lead active, happy and healthy lives.
Assessment summaries are used to monitor curriculum coverage and identify achievements and next steps in learning. This ensures clear progression in physical skills and knowledge across the school and supports all pupils in reaching their full potential in Physical Education.
