Intent

At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Music curriculum that engages and inspires pupils to develop a lifelong love of music. We believe music should be an enjoyable and enriching experience that nurtures creativity, self-expression and confidence.

Our intention is for children to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to perform, compose and appraise music with increasing competence. Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils explore rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics while using their voices and a range of instruments.

We encourage participation in a variety of musical experiences, enabling children to develop self-confidence, creativity and emotional wellbeing. Through exposure to music from different cultures, styles and historical periods, pupils gain an appreciation of music’s role in society and the wider world.

By the time they leave our school, children will have developed confidence as performers and creators, alongside a secure foundation for continued musical learning in the future.

 

Implementation

Our Music curriculum is delivered using Kapow Primary mixed-age planning, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and clear progression of knowledge and skills across year groups. The mixed-age structure is carefully sequenced so that pupils build on prior learning while developing increasing confidence and musical understanding over time.

Throughout their time with us, children use their voices and a range of instruments to explore rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics. Pupils are taught to sing with control and expression, play tuned and untuned instruments accurately and perform both individually and as part of a group.

Children also develop an understanding of how music is composed. They explore musical notation, structure and composition techniques, creating and refining their own pieces of music. Listening and appraising form an important part of the curriculum, with pupils studying music from different historical periods, cultures, countries, styles and traditions.

Music is enriched through opportunities to work with specialist teachers and to participate in a range of musical events and performances, both in school and within the wider community. These experiences help children develop confidence, teamwork and a love of music.

Through our Music curriculum, pupils develop creativity, self-expression and an appreciation of music in its many forms.

Impact

By the end of their time at Burton Pidsea Primary School, pupils will have developed confidence and proficiency across a wide range of musical skills and techniques. They will be able to sing, play instruments, compose and appraise music with increasing accuracy, control and expression.

Children will have a secure understanding of key musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics, and will be able to apply this knowledge when performing and creating their own music. They will listen thoughtfully to a variety of musical styles and traditions, demonstrating an appreciation of music from different cultures and historical periods.

Music plays an important role in supporting pupils’ self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Children are encouraged to reflect on their progress and take pride in their musical achievements, whether performing individually or as part of a group.
