Intent

Mathematics is a fundamental life skill and is essential for everyday life. At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we aim to develop confident, curious and resilient mathematicians who enjoy exploring mathematical ideas.

Our intention is to provide all pupils with a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts and the fluency needed to recall and apply knowledge accurately and efficiently. We promote a mastery approach to mathematics, ensuring children develop deep conceptual understanding, reasoning skills and the ability to solve problems in a range of contexts.

We encourage pupils to think mathematically, make connections within their learning and explain their reasoning using precise mathematical vocabulary. Through high expectations and carefully sequenced learning, we aim for all children to develop confidence, independence and a positive attitude towards mathematics that will support them throughout their education and beyond.

 

Implementation

At Burton Pidsea Primary School, mathematics is taught daily with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme across the whole school to ensure consistency of approach and clear progression in knowledge and skills from EYFS through to Year 6.

Lessons are carefully sequenced and structured in small, progressive steps to support a mastery approach. Pupils are given regular opportunities to revisit prior learning and build on their existing knowledge to develop secure and lasting understanding.

Children practise and apply new learning through a range of challenges and extended tasks. Teachers use questioning and discussion to deepen understanding and encourage pupils to explain their reasoning using precise mathematical vocabulary.

To support conceptual understanding, we use a wide range of practical resources, including counting objects, number lines, 100 squares and base ten equipment. Children are taught using the Concrete – Pictorial – Abstract (CPA) approach, enabling them to move from hands-on experiences to visual representations and finally to more formal written methods with confidence.

In addition to classroom teaching, pupils practise and consolidate key skills through carefully chosen online platforms such as TT Rock Stars, supporting the development of rapid recall of multiplication and division facts.

Ongoing assessment informs teaching, ensuring misconceptions are identified and addressed promptly. Appropriate support and challenge enable all pupils to make strong progress and develop confidence in their mathematical ability.

 

Impact

By the end of their time at Burton Pidsea Primary School, pupils will have developed deep and fluent mathematical knowledge and understanding. They will leave with a secure “toolbox” of mathematical skills, strategies and vocabulary that they can apply confidently across a wide range of contexts and real-life situations.

Children demonstrate accuracy and efficiency in calculation, alongside the ability to reason and solve problems with confidence. They are able to explain their thinking clearly, make connections across different areas of mathematics and approach challenges with resilience and independence.

Pupils are continually assessed against year group expectations to ensure strong progress. Termly assessments inform next steps in teaching and learning, enabling timely support and appropriate challenge. In Year 4, children complete the statutory Multiplication Tables Check to demonstrate secure recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. In Year 6, pupils undertake the statutory SATs assessments in mathematics, which assess both arithmetic and reasoning.

Through consistent teaching and high expectations, children leave our school well prepared for the mathematical demands of secondary education and everyday life.
