Intent

At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Computing curriculum that equips pupils with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. We strive to deliver engaging and innovative lessons that develop confidence, creativity and independence in the use of technology.

Our intention is for children to gain a secure understanding of key computing concepts, including computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils develop essential skills such as coding, problem-solving, researching, evaluating information and creating digital content. We recognise that these competencies are vital life skills that begin to develop from an early age and support learning across the wider curriculum.

Online safety is integral and embedded throughout all aspects of computing. We teach children to use technology responsibly, critically and confidently, enabling them to locate, assess and use information safely and effectively. Pupils learn how to protect themselves online and understand their responsibilities as digital citizens.

By the time they leave our school, children will be competent, thoughtful and confident users of technology, prepared for the digital demands of secondary education and the wider world.

 

 

Implementation

Our Computing curriculum is delivered using Kapow Primary mixed-age planning, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and clear progression of knowledge and skills across year groups. The mixed-age structure is carefully sequenced so that pupils build on prior learning while developing increasing confidence and independence in their computing skills.

Through engaging and challenging lessons, children develop their understanding across the three key areas of computing: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Pupils learn to design, write and debug programs, use a range of software to create and present content, and understand how digital systems work.

Online safety is a central part of our Computing curriculum. Children are taught how to use technology responsibly and safely, including applying SMART thinking when online. Online safety is reinforced through half-termly discrete lessons and participation in national initiatives such as Safer Internet Day. This ensures pupils understand how to protect themselves and behave appropriately in digital environments.

Computing is taught as a discrete subject, with meaningful opportunities to apply digital skills across other areas of the curriculum where appropriate. Through our Computing curriculum, pupils develop problem-solving skills, logical thinking and the confidence to use technology effectively in an ever-changing digital world.

 

Impact

By the end of their time at Burton Pidsea Primary School, pupils will have developed confidence, resilience and determination in their computing skills. They will understand key concepts across computer science, information technology and digital literacy, and be able to apply these skills effectively across the wider curriculum.

Children will become proficient and responsible users of technology, able to design and debug simple programs, create digital content and use technology safely and purposefully. They will demonstrate an understanding of online safety and show awareness of how to behave responsibly in digital environments.

Through progressive learning, pupils develop the knowledge and confidence needed to use computing skills as active local and global citizens in an increasingly digital world.

Assessment summaries are used to monitor curriculum coverage and identify achievements and next steps in learning. This ensures clear progression in computing knowledge and skills across the school and supports all pupils in reaching their full potential.
