Intent

At Burton Pidsea Primary School, we aim to provide a high-quality Art and Design curriculum that nurtures creativity, imagination and self-expression. We want children to develop the practical skills and confidence needed to experiment with a wide range of materials, techniques and processes.

Our intention is to engage, inspire and challenge pupils through meaningful artistic experiences that enable them to explore and communicate their ideas. Through carefully sequenced learning, children develop secure knowledge of artistic techniques, vocabulary and concepts, allowing them to create, evaluate and refine their work with increasing independence.

We also aim to broaden children’s understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritage by studying a diverse range of artists, craft makers and designers from different periods and cultures. Through this, pupils learn to appreciate the value of art in society and develop respect for creative expression in its many forms.

By the time they leave our school, children will have developed the confidence, skills and appreciation needed to continue exploring and valuing art and design throughout their education and beyond.

Implementation

Our Art and Design curriculum is delivered using Kapow Primary mixed-age planning, ensuring full coverage of the National Curriculum and clear progression of knowledge and skills across year groups. The mixed-age structure is carefully sequenced so that children build on prior learning while developing increasing confidence and creativity over time.

Through structured units of work, pupils develop their understanding of key artistic concepts, techniques and processes. They explore drawing, painting, sculpture and other media, learning to use a range of materials with control and purpose. Knowledge of colour, pattern, texture, form and space is revisited and deepened as children move through the school.

Wherever possible, first-hand experiences and real artefacts are used to stimulate creativity and expression. Children are given opportunities to work with local artists and to participate in real-life exhibitions, helping them to see themselves as artists and value their own creative outcomes.

Pupils study the work of significant artists, craft makers and designers from a range of cultures and historical periods. They are encouraged to evaluate and analyse creative works, including their own, using appropriate artistic vocabulary. While Art is taught as a discrete subject, meaningful links are made to other areas of the curriculum where appropriate to enrich learning.

Through our Art and Design curriculum, children are supported to express their ideas confidently, think creatively and develop an appreciation of art in its many forms.

Impact

By the end of their time at Burton Pidsea Primary School, pupils will have developed confidence and proficiency in a wide range of artistic skills and techniques. They will be able to use different materials and processes with increasing control, creativity and independence.

Children will have a secure understanding of the historical and cultural development of a variety of art forms. They will be able to discuss the work of significant artists, craft makers and designers, and reflect thoughtfully on their own creative work using appropriate artistic vocabulary.

Pupils take pride in their achievements and recognise the value of creativity as a means of personal expression. Through opportunities to showcase their work, they develop confidence and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Assessment summaries are used to monitor curriculum coverage and identify achievements and next steps in learning. This ensures clear progression in artistic skills and knowledge across the school and supports all pupils in reaching their full creative potential.
